[Announcements] SETI@Home needs your help - urgently! by Simon 08 Jan 2007, 10:44:09 pm
Announcements Hi folks,

as you may know, SETI@Home is funded by donations only.

Right now, the project is in danger of running out of money! This means, no more Alien searching for you or me, lower chances of ETI's being discovered in our lifetimes, among others.

It also means that the hard work a lot of people have put into this project may be for nothing, after all, and I'd really hate to see that happen.

Now, here's how to help - if you can, donate to SETI@Home directly! This only works if you have a Credit Card, however.

A lot of people have complained (me among them) about the lack of other donation options. Some have started to do something about it (like PopAndBob on his site).

I'm in contact with Eric Korpela, project scientist at SETI@Home. Together with him, I've discussed and come up with a plan how to offer some more donation options.

Namely, I've installed a PayPal Donation page on this site - look on the top left next to the logo. Eric (who is one of the few direct project employees) has full access to the PayPal account receiving the donations (it's a new one I made just for this purpose).

All funds donated to this PayPal account will go IN FULL to the SETI@Home project, that has to be clear from the start.

PayPal charges a transaction fee, this will be charged no matter what, and be the only deduction - also, it will already be deducted by the time the funds are credited to the account, so again, what comes in does go out in full.

I can only urge you all to donate - be it a dollar or be it more - every little bit counts!

Also, please make sure you fill in your SETI@Home account number for every donation - whether you want your green star or not - to make things easier for the project to process.

[Announcements] Spam messages by Simon 19 Aug 2006, 01:47:11 pm
Announcements Hiya,

it seems that this site has become popular among spammers, at least 4 different spam messages have been deleted already, most of them so quickly nobody even saw them (I hope, since it was minutes rather than hours from post to deletion/ban).

So anyway, should you see a spam message, please don't privmsg me about it, instead hit the "report to moderator" button because that gets my attention more quickly (it gets forwarded to my email account).

Chances are, it'll be gone soon if you do, although I cannot be the internet police Wink

Regards,
Simon.

[Announcements] Tech news on the S@H website by Simon 29 Nov 2006, 05:31:44 pm
Announcements Very good news from the SETI@Home team!

Read the third paragraph to see what I mean. Apart from the occasional glitch, the rest is all good news.

Quote from: S@H Tech News
November 29, 2006 - 19:00 UTC
Last night we had a blip of an outage due to our data download server losing its mount of the file server holding the workunits. This was strictly a random failure, and it worked itself out on its own. We saw similar behavior back when we had a heavier load on the entire system. We released the enhanced client which greatly reduced the rate of workunit/result exchange and therefore reduced the occurrence of these load-related problems. Thanks to Moore's Law and an ever-increasing user base, we'll need to address this issue sooner than later.

The other lingering, randomly-occurring problem has to do with "rough periods" accessing the database (see eariler tech news items for details). Basically, what's going on is this: every 24 hours or so a process dumps all useful user/host/team stats to XML files which other sites can upload and generate leader boards, graphs, etc. These tables have continually grown in size, and apparently when this process runs they can knock the result table out of memory. The feeder process, which keeps a healthy queue of available work to send out to users, needs the result table in memory or else a sub-second query to select more work becomes a multi-minute query to read the whole result table back into memory from disk. We're looking into making these queries more efficient.

We're also looking at setting up a new BOINC database server (remember that the BOINC database is separate for the SETI@home-specific science database which already is on a new server and working well). Recently Intel donated several pieces of hardware to us, including a quad dual-core Xeon processor system (i.e. 8 3GHz processors total). We're currently working out some system quirks, but when we begin trusting it we'll make this our master BOINC database server, and the current one will be a replica. This will provide an immediate backup if needed, and remove the necessity for the weekly outages. More to come on that. Another recently Intel system has already been set up and is being used as a backend science CPU server (and to read new data from hard drives sent up from Arecibo).

The last of the known never-touched classic data tapes has been read last week and is in the splitter queue. Next we will start reading tapes that have gone through the pipeline in some form or another, but for some reason never made it into our master database. Possible reasons include: bad data (but hopefully not), a tape drive failure that caused the tapes to remain unread (surprisingly more common than you'd think), poor initial analysis or database corruption leading to failure during redundancy checking. So don't be upset when tapes from the late 90's appear on the queue. Data from 1998 is worth the same as data taken in 2006. The ETs we are looking for come from light years away. A few years won't make any difference when looking for signals consistently repeating over time.

Thank you, Intel!
Keep up the good work.

I'm hoping that academic licenses for ICC and IPP may also be included in this sponsorship. It wouldn't hurt the stock apps performance, that's for sure - especially if they included licenses for Windows, Linux and OS X...one can hope, anyway Grin

Regards,
Simon.

[Optimized apps] New version of the KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool with Auto-Installer released by Simon 19 Nov 2006, 09:19:51 pm
Optimized apps Hi folks,

an updated version of the KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool has been released.

KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool with Auto-Installer - apps without graphics (1.75 MB compressed - 49.2 MB uncompressed - 7z rocks).

KWSN Test & Benchmark Tool with Auto-Installer - apps with graphics (1.82 MB compressed - 43.3 MB uncompressed).

The apps containing graphics are minimally slower than the ones without - your choice, either eye candy or raw speed.

Double-click the downloaded exe file and unpack its contents. Then run the file with the same name inside the directory it creates.

This version now contains all released Rev 2.0 apps as well as the 1.41 Core 2 one. It also has a slider to select between shorter run time with less accurate results or longer runtime with more accurate ones.

By default, "medium" is selected. On an Athlon64 3500+, "short" took about 4 minutes, "medium" took about 10 minutes and "long" took about 25 minutes.

On hosts that are slower than 1 GHz, "long" is not recommended - even "medium" may take a while. Hint: if the run results are very close, you may want to up it a notch towards accuracy to help you decide. The few extra minutes you spend here will give you days or more in the long run.

Regards,
Simon.

[Announcements] New version of the CPUID program by Simon 03 Oct 2006, 04:34:39 pm
Announcements Hi folks,

Ben Herndon has compiled a new version with the updates from the first test run.

Below is a list of the models already tested and correctly identified - if your CPU is in that list, you don't need to try this new version (though you can, of course). Please only post your results if your CPU was incorrectly identified or is missing in the list below.

Thanks for your help!

Please download the attached file and extract and run "CPUID 10-04-A.exe" by double-clicking it.

It will display a 'command' window with information about your CPU, and then pause, asking you to press enter for memory speed.
Press enter once to perform some benchmarks.
We hope the information is completely accurate.
If it is not accurate or...
If the model of CPU you have is not currently listed on the table of tested CPUs

  - and please, only then -
please copy this window of information and attach it to a reply to this thread.
How to copy the command window content depends on your version of windows.

  • Win XP- Look for the "C:\" tiny icon in the upper left of the window.
  • click on this tiny icon to bring up a menu
  • choose the edit -> mark   option (continue)
  • Win 2000 - Win SE
  • With the left mouse button - drag select the entire text area of the window
  • click the right mouse button or press a key
  • Now this text is in your clipboard
  • next launch [start menu] -> programs -> Accessories -> Notepad (or use Windows Key + R and just type "notepad" and hit enter)
  • paste the text into the notepad window.
  • Save the file, giving it a descriptive name, such as "cpuid <my processor model type - including core type>.txt"
  • attach it to a post in this thread

[Optimized apps] R-1.3 Linux apps released by Simon 26 Sep 2006, 02:39:48 pm
Optimized apps Hi folks,

here are some new SETI@Home apps for Linux. They're functionally the same as the Windows versions and compiled from the same codebase.
They've been tested and deliver valid results on all current test platforms, but as always, YMMV.

You can find the new apps here.

An Intel-only SSE3 build will follow soon.

To install these optimized apps, first download and install BOINC, then attach to SETI@Home (if you haven't already). Let it download the stock app and some WUs. Quit BOINC.

Then, simply unpack the .tar.bz file like so:

cd BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu
tar xfvj /where/you/downloaded/setiathome-5.15-1.3-*.tar.bz

Then restart BOINC and you're done. All archives contain a working app_info.xml preconfigured for the app they came with.

Happy crunching!

Regards,
Simon.

[Announcements] Site move - new URL by Simon 26 Aug 2006, 06:02:19 pm
Announcements Hi folks,

the great folks at the Knights who say Ni have offered to host this site on their machine. So, it will in the near future (this weekend, probably) be moving to http://lunatics.at (or http://www.lunatics.at, whichever you prefer).

The site move will be almost invisible to you, the visitor - I will put in place a script that redirects you to the new site (if you have bookmarked a direct link, it should also still work btw, also any downloads).

Basically, if you enter http://www.zadra.org/seti_enhanced/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=4, it will take the part behind the last slash and redirect you to the same page on the new server, just like if you had entered http://lunatics.at/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=4 and will take you to the same downloads area as before.

Please update your bookmarks accordingly (you will see that the URL in your browser changes when the switch happens).

Regards,
Simon.

[Announcements] Do not open any messages from "Dean Kelly"! by Simon 03 Aug 2006, 06:58:04 am
Announcements Hi folks,

someone with an axe to grind has registered on this site as "Dean Kelly" and sent out emails/private messages to as many registered members as he could.

Please, people, do your eyes a favour and DO NOT OPEN IT!
It contains gay adult material and links.

This user and his netblock have since been banned and I have set up a few more restrictions for new users. The only way it could have been totally stopped in the first place would have been to deny everyone the possibility to send personal messages (of which I have gotten 50 since this site started, so er...not switching them off) and changing the forum post style to moderated AND disabling the email feature of this board and and and....

All in all, it would have been like using a nuke to clean your house. It's effective, everything is crispy clean, but the fallout.... Wink

Again, please delete any such message without reading it. Your eyes will thank you.

Sorry it happened, a determined human attacker is near impossible to stop on a public board. We (Enigma/SMF site owners) tried all sorts of countermeasures thinking it was a bot, but it isn't. No bot so far has intelligently adapted to countermeasures. A lot of sites have been hit already.

Simon.

[Optimized apps] Windows optimized SETI@Home science apps - Release 1.3 by Simon 13 Jul 2006, 03:20:32 am
Optimized apps Along with the automatic test and installer package, I've updated the downloads to Release 1.3 of the science applications.

This update is a cosmetic fix - it inserts information about the true CPU speed into the stderr section of each result.
An example - my Pentium D says it's a 2.66 GHz CPU and BOINC records this information. It actually runs at 3.85 GHz, though (it's overclocked).

Monza_MH26 suggested it's a good idea to show the real CPU speed as well - I agree and added it.

Simon.

[Optimized apps] Automatic test and benchmark package - includes installer (BETA)! by Simon 13 Jul 2006, 03:08:24 am
Optimized apps Due to popular demand, I've created a small program that runs each of the optimized science apps and checks whether they work on your system and how long they took.

It then suggests the best one for your system and will automatically install it for you if it can find your BOINC directory (and you click the automatic install button).

Automatic test and benchmark package with installer (includes R-1.3 science applications)

If the package or installer don't work on your system, please tell me about it!

CAUTION: You will have to have the Microsoft .NET framework version 1.1 or later installed to use this application! In most cases, you will have it already.
If not, you can grab it from Microsoft.

Regards,
Simon.

[Announcements] New downloads section: Test and Benchmark Tools by Simon 10 Jul 2006, 12:38:01 am
Announcements Hi everyone,

I've put together a complete test package (the same one that was used to generate the result comparison tables). It includes all current clients for Windows except MMX.

Test and Benchmark Tools downloads

You can also download just the WUs used separately.

When you unpack the full test package, it will create a directory called "kwsn-test". Inside this directory you can find several .cmd and .exe files.

You can use each of the included .cmd files to benchmark on your computer. Either run bench1.cmd to bench7.cmd separately, or run benchall.cmd.

Clients that do not run on your system will just skip and use only about 0-1 seconds of processing time. You may get "file not found" warnings if some do not run - you can safely ignore them.

Please share your results!

Regards,
Simon.

[Announcements] Funny business by Simon 04 Jul 2006, 11:41:09 am

someone managed to convince http://www.securecomputing.com that this site was pornographic in nature.  Shocked Roll Eyes Kind of childish, if you ask me. Anyway, I just got them to re-list, so your web filter should not stop you from coming here anymore.

Should you check out just http://www.zadra.org, you will find that it is a doctor's page (my Dad's) and not in the least to do with any nudies. Well, unless you just happen to think his picture is too sexy to be put online... Grin

Announcements Hi everyone,

GREAT NEWS!

With the help of Pam Heinze, Mr A. Nonymous and Kerry Lawson, I have managed to raise all the funds necessary to buy a license for the necessary Windows development tools.

This means that there will be publicly released optimized apps available for everyone again. Linux, Windows, OS X - next up is FreeBSD, as the Intel tools should work there too (thanks Tetsuji!).

[Optimized apps] Initial public release - SSE Linux optimized Seti@Home client (5.15) by Simon 01 Jul 2006, 02:33:03 pm
Optimized apps Hi everyone,

this client has been compiled using Intel's excellent compiler and library package (Links in the Links section, also in the How-To). It's version 5.15 and based on Eric Korpela's source tarballs.

It has been tested on a lot of different hardware - various Pentium 3, Athlon XP and Duron-based machines. The results it produces have validated 100% in all tests.

Still, if you decide to use this client, it's at your own risk. Despite all testing that has gone into making sure it performs valid science and does so quickly, something might go wrong. YMMV.

That said, here's the download link:

Linux SSE-optimized Seti@Home client (UPX-compressed)
Linux SSE-optimized Seti@Home client (uncompressed)

Please post whether it worked for you or not!
You will have to register before you can post.

Installation is very simple - when you unpack the archive, it will put all its files into a directory called "setiathome-5.15-kwsn-sse". Copy the contents of that folder (all files inside it, not the directory!) into BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu.

You should test whether it works on your platform before copying it - simply run it in the directory you unpacked it to. This way, if something goes wrong, you won't lose your cached WUs.

Then simply restart (stop and start) your BOINC client, it should recognize the app_info.xml and resume all your WUs for you.

Regards,
Simon

[Optimized apps] Initial public release - SSE2 Linux optimized Seti@Home client (5.15) by Simon 25 Jun 2006, 06:49:33 pm
Optimized apps Hi everyone,

a lot of people have been waiting for the first one to step forward and offer new optimized clients for PCs. So I'm going to take that leap and do it in the hope that many others may follow.
